So what’s the difference between affiliate, network marketing and direct sales?

Direct Sales Companies

Direct sales are often called party plan and the business model is generally based on ‘parties’ or sharing products through social gatherings (in person or online) they are focused on product sales with growing a team or downline as a way to increase your income. Usually you buy into the opportunity in the form of a low cost business kit. Some require you carry inventory, others won’t.  

Network Marketing Companies

Network Marketing or MLM companies are also product or service based. There is usually (but not always) a fee to join the business with an option to buy kits. The premise is to build your downline and network by having others join your business. There is often a requirement for regular personal purchases or “auto-shipping” of products. Network Marketing/MLM businesses often have more lenient policies in how you market your business allowing for more traditional marketing tactics.

Affiliate Programs

Affiliate models for the most part do not require you to purchase products or join a business. You are simply paid for a commission for products you sell through sharing the links provided to you by the company.  Some companies offer both a direct sales and affiliate model.

What kind of business should I choose?

A good place to start is to decide which kind of products you want to sell. Do you love fashion or jewelry? Are you passionate about health and wellness? 

You need to pick products that you will enjoy sharing with others.

The next choice is to decide which business model you want to pursue. If you want to use blogging or social media as part of your marketing you’ll need to choose a company that allows it, so you will need to look the company rules around how you are allowed to market your business. This can vary widely between companies.

You may have a blog and want to find companies that have straight affiliate programs that you can apply for. These are usually no cost to join (though some do charge) and can be a way for you to earn money through writing posts about the products you like to use.
